Instruments Ballet Company was born out of the vision of Founder and Artistic Director Rebekah Atkins to create a dance company that goes beyond technique and entertainment. As a young dancer and into her professional career, Rebekah experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly of the American dance industry from studios to professional ballet companies across the nation.
At age 17 while dancing professionally in South Carolina, she surrendered her life to Jesus Christ. The desire to honor Him in all that she did drove her the next several years to dream and to seek His plan for her life no matter the cost. In 2011 she began training at Ballet Magnificat, the world’s premiere Christian ballet company in Jackson, Mississippi. Her time there as a Trainee and later an Omega Company Apprentice greatly broadened her vision for a dance company that not only glorifies the name of Jesus, but changes the hearts and lives of audiences worldwide. She saw firsthand the power of a well produced, Gospel-centered story live on stage to touch hearts and reveal the great beauty and majesty of the Word of God. She spent three years with them learning about ballet technique, choreography, music, set production, costume design, leadership, and teamwork before moving to Portland, Oregon in 2014.
Finally, after three more long years of planning and preparation with lots of support and prayers from family and friends…Instruments Ballet Company was launched in Oregon City in September of 2017. Our first season started small with just four company dancers, including Rebekah who was also teaching and choreographing. We had the privilege of being invited to perform at Project Dance Calgary in Canada as well as at Riverwest Church in Lake Oswego and Lake Grove Presbyterian Church. We held our first annual gala at BodyVox Dance Center located in the Pearl District in downtown Portland and produced our very first full-length production titled “I Believe”.
Our second season saw us grow by six more dancers and several more performance opportunities. We sponsored a visit from our friends at Ballet Magnificat to further introduce Portland to the idea of excellence in Christian dance and they performed at Wilsonville High School. We had the privilege of performing at Southwest Bible Church in Beaverton as well as Hope Christian Fellowship in Burien, Washington. We held our second annual gala again at BodyVox Dance Center and produced our second full-length production titled “CREATION: He Breathed”. This show incorporated stunning lighting, costumes, unique choreography and audio visual components to beautifully elevate our portrayal of the first seven days of God’s Creation. We also pioneered our maiden voyage down through California for our very first out of state performance and teaching tour. We had the most incredible time and were so blessed by the hospitality of our sponsors and hosts. God’s presence was richly felt as we travelled around the state in our white, fifteen passenger van. We can’t wait to go again!
